More Photos and Thoughts From My Capybara Article for the New Yorker
Warning: Cute Rodents Ahead
People seem to like my New Yorker article about the world’s largest rodent. https://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2025/02/03/how-the-capybara-won-my-heart-and-almost-everyone-elses
So I’ve decided to give you some more photos to look at! Above, it’s me and capybara-san at the Cafe Capiba in Tokyo. Capybara-san, you are so kawaii! And in the right marinade, so oishi!
Now I am visiting Maria Somma of Dark Wings Wildlife in Florida. This is Cheesecake the teenage and more house-oriented capy watching some football on a big TV. She kinda reminds me of a cat sometimes, though here the rodent is much bigger than the feline!
Pumpkin the capy, who rules the outdoors, may well be my favorite of the two. She’s older and wiser and knows how to stand on her hind legs for a treat.
Stevie the Sheltie gets along with both capys. Isn’t it nice to have a friend who is even furrier than you?
Now we are in Nordelta, a suburb of Buenos Aires where capys frolic despite the war being waged against them by land-grabbing humans. They don’t have to worry about caimans or jaguars here, just the distant roar of a bulldozer.
